The New Community Shelter helps adults experiencing homelessness.
The New Community Shelter was established in 1994 to provide shelter and supportive services to adult men and women experiencing homelessness. The mission is to provide shelter, to meet the basic needs of homeless men and women, and to provide supportive services that assist people in their transition to permanent housing and a self-sustaining lifestyle.
The major programs include: Emergency Shelter, Transitional Living, Professional Case Management & Supportive Services, and a Community Meal Program. The Emergency Shelter program, the program we would like to ask you to consider funding, provides ninety-eight emergency shelter beds for men and women. Linens, pillows, personal hygiene items, laundry soap, and clothing are provided (available mostly through in-kind donations). Free laundry facilities and detergent are provided. Breakfast and an evening meal are provided every day of the year. A noon meal is offered on Weekends and Holidays (when the local Salvation Army noon meal is closed). Additionally, a bag lunch is available to all residents who are working.
The New Community Shelter provides another important piece in the housing continuum-a Transitional Living Program. This program was expanded from sixteen to twenty efficiency apartments in 2011. Four of the units are dedicated to veterans with chronic mental health and/or substance abuse issues. A resident may participate in the Transitional Living Program for up to twenty-four months.
The New Community Shelter also partners with the local community by offering a Community Meal Program that provides an evening meal everyday of the year and a noon meal on all weekends and holidays for anyone in need of supplementing their nutrition, including adults and children. The only requirements for this program are sobriety and peacefulness.
TRANSITIONAL LIVING PROGRAM
On site housing is available in 20 single-occupancy apartments - three apartments are for Military Veterans only. Residents participate in a program designed to resolve issues that might prevent transition into permanent housing. Maximum length of stay is two years.
