Emergency Shelter Program
Our Emergency Shelter Program is located at 19 Valley Road in Middletown, Rhode Island. Six families with children may be accommodated at any one time in the efficiency units with includes beds, a bureau, a full bathroom, and a closet. The families share use of a kitchen, television room, dining room, playground and a learning center.
Eligibility requirements for families include: be at least 18 years old and have a minor child in custody, and be homeless.
Before acceptance into the emergency shelter, families must:
- complete a telephone screening with United Way 2-1-1 and be placed on the Statewide Family Shelter Waiting List;
- should respond within 2 hours to a call from Lucys Hearth when they call to report an opening;
- must provide various documents, including birth certificates and other identification, health insurance cards if any, and financial and housing history records.
Emergency Shelter services include:
- crisis intervention,
- life-skills group,
- a daily goal-setting group,
- case management,
- parenting skills groups,
- financial literacy education,
- preparation for testing for a General Equivalency Degree (GED),
- mental health treatment,
- job readiness skills development,
- nutrition classes,
- after-school homework help,
- art classes,
- fitness classes,
- transportation to appointments,- referrals to outside providers for education, training, medical care and additional mental health treatment.
Lucys Hearth has 9 Transitional Apartments in the new facility located at 19 Valley Road in Middletown. An additional four units are located in various Newport County locations. The program assists mothers and their children to overcome barriers to living on their own.
To be eligible for this program, mothers must have successfully completed the Emergency Shelter Program and provide the required documentation.
Transitional apartment program participants will continue to participate in life skills education as well as case management in their apartment on a weekly basis. If needed, families from the off-site apartments may still return to the emergency shelter program to participate in programs and services.
Permanent Apartment Program
Lucys Hearth provides permanent subsidized housing through the "RoadHome" program from Rhode Island Housing. These apartments are available for Lucys Hearth residents who require long-term stabilization services.
Outreach and Aftercare Program
Lucys Hearth is committed to ensuring its residents avoid future homelessness. Former residents of any Lucys Hearth program may receive, for up to six months,
- case management,
- crisis intervention,
- budgeting assistance,
- referrals to community providers, and
- advocacy to assist in accessing community resources or to trouble-shoot issues that may arise.
