Samaritan House, Inc. is a nonprofit organization in Newport, Oregon, established in 1988 to provide emergency shelter and meals to homeless families. Since that time our program has expanded to include transitional shelter, case management and support services to assist families in achieving self sufficiency and stable housing. Ours is a program of compassion, but with expectations that our residents will be responsible for the successful outcomes of their stay with us.
Services:
Initially, families enter our program in the emergency shelter phase for up to 30 days. During this period, families are expected to apply for needed resources, address urgent health issues, locate childcare, and, if feasible, seek employment and housing.
Transitional Shelter:
Most families need additional time to re group and get back on their feet. This program is available to families who have met expectations in the first 30 days and who agree to work toward self-sufficiency by participating in educational programs, working on personal goals, and saving 60% of their income toward the costs of moving into a place of their own. Families may stay for an additional three months in the transitional shelter program.
Transitional Housing
Some families will need even more time to transition to independence. Several of our apartment units are rented to families who have successfully completed the transitional shelter program. They may need to establish a good rental history, repair credit problems, or save additional funds to obtain other housing. In this program, families may rent a one- or two-bedroom apartment for up to six months.
Because the number of homeless families is growing, we usually have a waiting list to get into the shelter. Families may contact us by phone or in person for information about our program and to get on the waiting list. We can also provide information about other available resources that may be of help.
