Lalitamba Saranam (fondly known as Frederick's Place after our cat mascot) is a home for women in transition ages 18-25, including survivors of domestic violence and runaway youth located in the heart of New York City.
In caring for guests, we offer wellness programs that tend to body, mind, and spirit. Our warm-hearted volunteers hail from diverse backgrounds in integrative nutrition, mental health, the arts, spirituality, and more.
Through years of working with people in need of permanent housing, we understand how stressful the situation can be. It is not unusual for someone to be "in the system" for two years before finally finding housing. During this time, people may be shuttled from one shelter to another, without feeling that they belong anywhere.
Lalitamba Saranam feels like home. We welcome everyone who stays here with warmth and respect. We are pleased to offer an extensive book and music library, in addition to supportive programs that encourage our guests to be all that they can be.
One of our mentors often spoke about how powerful the kindness of strangers can be. Kindness is the way to see each other through the rough times and back home to the heart. We are one human family. This is a basic truth upon which Lalitamba Saranam was founded.
Lalitamba Saranam is affiliated with Mahakailasa Ashram (Lalitamba Mandiram). The shelter is co-sponsored by Lalitamba magazine and the CoNGO Committee of Spirituality, Values and Global Concerns at the United Nations.
