Do you have any advice for those wanting to stay at this shelter?

User Answers

  1. Focus on where you want to go from here, don't focus on the negatives about the place because the truth is it is not worse than sleeping outside and frankly one of the best out of the many shelters I stayed at during my time of strife.

How long can you stay here?

User Answers

  1. As long as you have something you can use as rent money. They take our EBT cards and use all the funds on them. But not food for us, we get outdated junk, stale or even green food.

I ended up homeless after life saving surgery and a 3 month stay in the hospital. The bills and horrible times after it all, ended up ruining me. After a while I lost my house, my car and any means to fix any of it. I eventually was lucky enough to have a friend let me stay with his family for a while, but couldn't get back on my feet... they had to make room in their small house, so they found this place and ended up dropping me off here one day. I thought I was going to die. Never needing anyone's help before, made it difficult for me to deal with having to be so helpless. After Bob Hughes @ the House of Hope, took me in, made me feel welcome and offered any help I needed... I felt a little better but still didn't know what to expect, since I never had been homeless or stayed in any kind of shelter before. He (Rev. Hughes, Program Director @ the House) let me come in, fed me, gave me a bed and never asked me for ANYTHING in return. I had no income, no ability to pay for anything and no belongings. I never met anyone like him before. Slowly, things got better. There were so many good people here! I never would have thought I would meet some of the best and most inspiring people I ever imagined... In a place that by all rights, should be filled with misery. But NO, I have never felt closer to others, as I have come to, here. So much has happened and I have changed so much that I could never tell you all of it, without writing a book, however, I can tell you this... This place and the people in it saved my life, taught me things I didn't even know I needed to learn, and made me appreciate who I am, what I am, and what I am capable of. I can't imagine my future life, without this experience, molding it. I am thankful to have ended up here, and would not want it taken away from me. I now help others here, and spend most of my time doing things that will hopefully help others find what I have... Inner peace, gratitude and an unbelievable outlook for the future. Thank you House of Hope, thank you Bob Hughes and thank you to the amazing, strong, resilient people who have come through my life while here. You are all so much more than you know. If you hear anything negative about this place or anyone in it... then please consider the source? Because if you need help, and don't have anything at all, this place will take you in, give you the tools to help yourself move forward, and support you all the way, as long as you want it, stay sober, and be honest with yourself.
