FOH provides separate men's and women's overnight shelters, serving individuals 18 years of age and older every evening on its Worthington Street campus. No responsible individuals are turned away. FOH is recognized as the shelter of last resort for those individuals needing temporary overnight lodging as FOH facilitates the process to secure permanent housing.
The men's shelter is located at 769 Worthington Street in Springfield. This shelter is for single men 18 years of age or older.
The women's shelter is located at 755 Worthington Street. It provides overnight shelter for single women 18 or older.
Shower and laundry facilities are available for our shelter guests.
Both men's and women's shelters open for the evening at 5:30 p.m. Beds are assigned as they become available. There is usually a waiting list for beds and floor space is limited. All check-ins must be completed by 8 p.m. unless special arrangements have been made (employer's letter, medical emergency,etc.) If you do not check in on time, your bed may be given to the next person on the list. Individuals new to shelter should attempt to have a phone interview in advance of their arrival.
Meals
Meals are served Sunday through Saturday in the FOH dining room at 755 Worthington Street.
Breakfast: 8:00 9:00 AM
Lunch: 12:00-1:00 PM
Housing
It is our goal at Friends of the Homeless to house chronically homeless, homeless, and low income individuals either by providing permanent supportive housing in our properties, on our Worthington Street campus, or in the community at large. FOH owns and operates 110 single-room units available through waitlists for each building for qualified applicants.
Worthington House, 769 Worthington Street, located on the FOH campus is permanent housing, with 60 furnished single room occupancy units in a dormitory style setting with common kitchens, lounges, restrooms, and elevator. Women and men live on separate floors. These are Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program (MRVP) subsidized units. To qualify you must be homeless or chronically homeless at the time of application and acceptance. A priority is given to chronically homeless applicants. The wait list and applications are managed on campus. This property is handicap accessible. Free laundry on site.
The Apartments at 755 Worthington Street, located on the FOH campus is a newly constructed residential building comprised of 32 enhanced single room occupancy studio apartments that are fully furnished and include a kitchenette and bathroom. The building is co-ed and is Section 8 subsidized. Applicants must be chronically homeless and submit initial applications to the Springfield Housing Authority on Sanderson Street. The first floor of this building is handicap accessible. Free laundry on site.
