The mission of the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless is to provide safe shelter, food, support services, and an avenue to self-sufficiency for homeless adults in our community. We strive to accomplish our mission by adhering to our core values to treat all with dignity, to offer support and opportunity, to achieve results through competence and creativity, and to practice responsible stewardship.
The Shelter currently offers several programs designed to meet the needs of its clients:
Boulder County Cares (BCC) street outreach program equips those living on the streets in winter with basic life-sustaining supplies, transportation, and referrals to appropriate services and agencies.
The Winter Sheltering program furnishes hot meals and a warm, safe place to spend the night for those who have no other options during the months of October through April. Additionally, the Shelter is open each morning year-round to provide a hot breakfast, access to showers, and other limited services to those not staying overnight at the Shelter. Winter Sheltering services are available from October 15 through April 15 for any adult in need. Dinner and breakfast, a safe place to sleep, storage space for personal belongings, phone and mail service, access to showers and laundry facilities, and meetings with case managers are all provided free of charge. Intake is from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily. All residents must be checked in by 7:00 p.m. unless prior arrangements have been made. In order to stay at the Shelter, residents must abide by basic behavioral rules and get tested for TB.
The Transition Program is a year-round service offered to homeless men and women who are committed to regaining independent housing and who live drug- and alcohol-free, have sustainable income, and a clear budget and savings plan. The goal for the program is to serve homeless individuals in transition to permanent housing via case management and contract arrangements with the objective of clients developing individual life plans to identify and address issues that have led them to homelessness and to break the cycle of poverty. Program Goal: Clients have safe, temporary shelter; become more stable, and attain safe, sustainable housing upon exiting the program. Transition Program residents work closely with Shelter case managers to determine what has led them to homelessness, and what steps they must take to overcome their situation. Transition Program residents must live drug and alcohol free, pay a weekly program fee, and abide by a budget and savings plan. To qualify for the Transition Program residents must have sustainable income that can be verified and an obtainable transition plan. Program residents have the opportunity to stay in a semi-private dorm room. The year-round transition program has a maximum stay of nine months.Anyone desiring to enter the Transition Program needs to schedule an intake appointment with a Shelter case manager. Clients currently staying at the Shelter can schedule an appointment by speaking with a staff member.
Off-site longer-term housing for individuals and families is provided through Transitional Housing.
The Housing First program is a collaborative regional initiative emphasizing placement of Boulder County's most chronically homeless individuals into permanent housing, supported by concentrated case management.
