As news outlets share more about the growing crisis of COVID-19 and its impact on our community, we wanted to connect as we navigate through the uncertainty together. We are taking every precaution here at our offices and in our work throughout the community to ensure that we all stay healthy and safe.
Our offices are closed to outside visitors and volunteer groups, but we continue to deliver quality housing and support services to families in need. Our families need help now more than ever! Below are some ways YOU can help the families we serve during this difficult time:
1) Drop off donations like shelf-stable food items or hygiene products at Save the Family's Donation Center, located at 444 N. Country Club Drive, Mesa, AZ 85201, between 8 am and 1 pm, 2 pm to 5 pm. Just like everyone else, our families are in need of toilet paper, paper towels, and pantry necessities. However, in many cases our families are limited by SNAP benefit allowances and are additionally burdened by school and youth program closures that typically help meet nutritional needs for little ones.
2) Stay social while staying safe. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram! We want to stay connected to you despite fewer chances to meet in person.

Donations Needed: New or gently used items. Household, feminine products, clothing, furniture, gift cards, most living items you can possibly think of. Volunteers Needed: Volunteers have always played an integral role in Save the Family’s success. Last year nearly 7,000 volunteers gave the gift of time equaling over 31,000 service hours! Save the family’s volunteers contribute more than $1,000,000 in time and service annually. We rely on a robust volunteer base for the following:
Offering legal, medical, and dental support services
Acting as classroom tutors and mentors
Rehabilitating our housing units
Providing meals/snacks for our clients during their classes
Supporting our Thrift Store operations
For more information about volunteering or to organize a group volunteer project, please contact our Volunteer Services Department at volunteer@savethefamily.org or 480-898-0228 ext. 201.
Volunteer as a Group
Each year Save the Family works with over 100 businesses, civic groups and ecclesiastical organizations to support our clients. Our outstanding volunteer groups participate in a wide range of activities, including the following:
Service Saturdays
Service Saturdays was started as an opportunity for church groups, scouts, youth groups and families to come together one Saturday a month (usually the last Saturday of the month) to handle projects to benefit our client families. An example is putting together first aid kits, snack packs, family fun kits, etc. These items will help us be able to provide those “extras” for our families in need.
Welcome Home Paint and Clean Projects
With over 190 housing units across the East Valley, and waiting lists of families who desire a unit, volunteers play a vital role in our “Welcome Home” program by cleaning and painting homes to help prepare units quickly. Save the Family will provide all supplies, including bottled water. Projects can be completed within 3 to 4 hours when a group of 8 to 15 volunteers participate. We schedule group projects Monday through Friday during agency business hours. Paint and clean group projects can be scheduled up to a year in advance. (Please be advised that these projects are booked out for several months.)
Sack Meals
Save the Family hosts weekly client-based programs that occur during meal times. In an effort to be hospitable and ensure maximum attendance, we provide a sack meal or snack to participants, both children and adults. Volunteers prepare meals at their home or workplace. Then they drop off the finished sacks at our main office during business hours. This opportunity is excellent for individuals and groups who want to contribute to our mission but have limited time to spend away from home or the office.
Clean and Sanitize Classrooms
Small groups of 5 to 10 volunteers are perfect to help Save the Family keep our classrooms and playrooms clean. Volunteer duties consist of cleaning and organizing three small rooms at our main office in Mesa. Save the Family will provide all supplies. Projects are scheduled Monday through Friday during agency business hours.
Organize a Donation Drive or Baby Shower
Save the Family welcomes volunteers willing to organize donation drives with their club, church, business, or neighborhood group. Drives allow us to support “Dynamic Way,” a provision service for clients in need of everyday items such as diapers and baby wipes, personal hygiene items, and household cleaning products. Baby showers are held for parents who don’t have loved ones able to host a shower for them. Groups of 10 to 12 volunteers organize each shower, providing refreshments, decorations, and gifts. Showers are held the first Wednesday of every month.
Holiday Sponsorship
Every year Save the Family provides holiday meals and gifts for families who would otherwise be unable to celebrate the season. We welcome groups who will sponsor holiday meals and gifts in November and December.
Teach A Class
Our clients’ needs change with time, so we’re always looking for new, beneficial classes to empower them. Volunteers currently teach classes in the following areas:
GED tutoring
financial literacy
nutrition
career development and support
Some volunteers also provide resources from the community for our clients and help with special client events. If you are interested in being engaged specifically with our client classes, please contact our Volunteer Services Department at volunteer@savethefamily.org or (480) 898-0228 ext. 201.
Join our Women’s Auxiliary
Save the Family’s Women’s Auxiliary originated in 2011 with the goal of assisting the organization to achieve its mission by helping families conquer homelessness and build a bright future for their children. This group of dynamic, community-minded women support Save the Family through projects that range from assisting with annual fundraising events, to volunteering, to promoting goodwill toward our valuable programs. The auxiliary also provides an opportunity for networking and socializing. In other words, these women support our mission and each other.
When you join the auxiliary, you can participate in several ways. We meet regularly in the East Valley. Our volunteer and support services occur throughout the year, so if you’re unable to make the meetings, you can still participate–with no obligation for minimum participation.
Visit and “like” the Women’s Auxiliary Facebook Events Page to stay updated on future events.
To join, please contact Save the Family’s Development Department at development@savethefamily.org or (480) 898-0228 ext. 205.
