Talladega County is a rural area where public transportation is very limited; in fact there is no public bus transportation system in place. It goes without saying that some go days without food and no one really is aware because they are unable to move about as they did in their earlier days.
The unemployment rate in Alabama is 8.7%. Talladega County, AL is 8.9 per the Bureau of Labor Statistics in November 2011. There are 420,000 Veterans in the state of Alabama of which 18,000 live in Talladega County. Industry in Talladega County is virtually gone. Training is needed to provide our citizens technical skills which can be used in other job fields.
It is our goal through this project to provide food to 12,000 individuals and allow them to enroll in our program to prepare healthy meals. In addition to providing food for our citizens, we are helping to prepare our veterans for job opportunities. Our target market will be veterans returning from war within the last 3-5 years. We will teach them how to grow their food then prepare and market products for sale. To add another avenue for advancement to them we will teach computer skills.
Programs
Food & Clothing Outreach
This program has been the heart of our operation for the past seven years. We served over 11,000 clients in 2011. The food service provides fresh vegetables, frozen food, can foods, other boxed foods and other personal hygiene items obtained from donors. We are expanding our operation in order serve our clients on a larger scale. Our goal is to serve 12,000 clients in the next year. We will increase food storage space by 50% capacity by adding a second large walk-in freezer and add more food partnerships.
